The Psi Chi Honor Society and the Department of Psychological Science are pleased to present the 11th annual Martin Gardner Celebration of Mind at Carthage on Thursday, September 17, from 7:00–9:00 p.m. in the Straz Atrium.

 Every fall, people around the world gather to celebrate the legacy of Martin Gardner, magician, mathematician, skeptic, puzzler, Lewis Carroll scholar, and prolific science writer. This year, we’re celebrating Gardner’s fascination with the intersection of mathematics and magic with Mathemagics!

 Gardner wrote more than 100 books on mathematics and magic, and his work inspired generations of magicians, mathematicians, and curious minds. Our featured guest, magician Randy Goodman, is an expert in Gardner’s mathematical magic. Goodman will perform a selection of Gardner’s ingenious tricks and then pull back the curtain to reveal the surprising mathematical secrets behind them.

 But there’s more to these tricks than mathematics. Goodman will be joined by Dr. Anthony Barnhart of the Department of Psychological Science and mathematician and data scientist Dr. Sara Jensen, who will explore the psychological tendencies and mathematical principles that magicians exploit to make the seemingly impossible possible.

 Come for the magic. Stay for the mathematics, psychology, and delightful weirdness. You might even leave with a few tricks of your own and a new appreciation for the wonderfully strange ways that minds work.
